Occupational Therapy (OT) is a health profession dedicated to helping people with sensory, motor and behavior problems perform their daily occupations to the best of their abilities. When working with children, occupational therapists use purposeful activities to assist the child in performing their childhood “occupations” of play, school, academic-work, and self-care activities.
Occupational Therapy Services address the following concerns:
Fine Motor Skills:
- Not using functional grasp on tools
- Poor handwriting
- Poor keyboarding
- Decreased hand strength
- Decreased dexterity
- Hand fatigues when writing
Strength and Stability:
- Poor posture
- Fatigues quickly in sports/activities
- Poor shoulder stability
- Relaxed, loose quality to muscles
- Hypermobility of joints (extra flexibility)
Sensory Processing:
- Sensitive to sounds, smells, light or touch
- Afraid of movements
- Doesn’t like how clothes feel
- Very picky about textures of food
- Gets so wound up that he/she is unsafe
- Constantly seeking movement
- Very lethargic
- Difficulty with transitions
Visual Perceptual Skills:
- Difficulty with eye tracking
- Difficulty copying from the board
- Difficulty completing mazes, puzzles, dot to dots
- Omits or reverses letters
Balance:
- Difficulty standing on one foot
- Difficulty with bike/scooter riding
- Bumps into obstacles
- Falls over easily
Ocular-Motor Control:
- Difficulty with eye tracking
- Eyes fatigue quickly
- Watery eyes
- Frequent blinking
Motor Planning:
- Difficulty climbing playground equipment
- Catching, throwing, kicking balls are hard to master
Self Care:
- Unable to dress self
- Unable to use utensils
- Unable to complete snaps, buttons, tie shoes
